Incremental Phases

A new ongoing collection of auditory journeys inspired by Shannon Amidon's latest art series, Efflorescence. Each sonic tableau invokes a mythical or imaginary place that also inspired the art piece of the same name.

The pieces are made up of recorded, altered and synthesized sounds that represent the sometimes harsh and beautiful geographies and conditions in which these plants struggle and thrive. The sounds are allowed to evolve in their own time, exposing imperfections and developing the beauty of these imperfections.

Bustling

“Bustling”
is an immersive, eight speaker surround sound installation inspired by Shannon Amidon’s art series, “Into Pieces,” and was first presented on May 17th and 18th, 2008, at an outdoor installation coinciding with the Silicon Valley Open Studio event. “Bustling” represents 24 hours in the South American jungle, starting at the quiet of midday, shadowing the activity of the night and coming back to the relative calm brought on by the heat of the sun. The piece explores the musicality of speech, driven by rhythm and drums and incorporates recordings of the jungle in Peru. The spoken phrases are taken from text used in the art series, describing various kinds of insects depicted in the art.

Originally presented outdoors, the installation was constructed such that the listener would be surrounded by the eight speakers. Elements of the composition move from speaker to speaker, sometimes to create the feeling of movement around the listener and other times to create a call and response or a conversation. In order to present the piece here in a form that can best imitate the experience, Compartment has made a binaural recording (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binaural_recording) of the installation. In order to have the best experience possible, please wear stereo headphones while listening. While it is not a perfect representation, it is the best way to turn 8 speakers into 2. Compartment recommends taking your mp3 player and headphones to a park and sitting in a patch of sun-drenched grass.
